The Butler County Civic League will honor the memory of a legendary Civil Rights pioneer Monday when it holds it annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Breakfast.

“I think it’s very important to have this event to keep (Dr. King’s) legacy going,” Dorothy Berry, a member of the Butler County Civic League, said. “Young people need to grow up hearing about and learning about Dr. King.”

According to Berry, the Butler County Civic League has been holding the annual breakfast for more than two decades.

This year’s event will feature singing and praise dancing, as well as a speech from keynote speaker Beatrice Forniss.

Forniss is the director of the Governor’s Resources and Economic Assistance Programs in Montgomery and a native of Mobile. She taught public school for several years and also served as a school counselor in the Lowndes County and the Montgomery Public School System, before leaving to work with the State of Alabama in the Department of Economic and Community Affairs as the special projects director.

Forniss is active in community service the Montgomery area and has been awarded several awards for her service, including the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Community Service Award.

The breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. at Dunbar Recreation Center in Greenville. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $5.
