Come January 14, “lots of fun, information and inspiration” is on tap for those raising funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. That’s the kick-off date for the 2010 edition of American Cancer Society Relay For Life in Butler County.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. next Thursday in the Wendell Mitchell Conference Center on the LBWCC Greenville campus.

“Everyone who wants to be a part of Relay is invited to join us – we’ll have plenty of refreshments and excitement to go around,” said Galahad Smith, RFL chair.

While the kickoff will offer tasty treats and door prizes, it is also an important Relay meeting, Smith said.

“At the January 14 event, anyone who wants to have a team can sign up their team, get their team packet and learn all about what Relay For Life is about,” he said.

“I encourage everyone, whether it is a business, church, school, civic organization, community or simply a group of friends, to attend the RFL Kick-Off and start their own team to help support the fight against cancer.”

Each team gets a campsite at Relay (which is slated for May 7-8 at the Greenville YMCA football field) along with the chance to participate in what Smith calls “one of the best, fun-filled community events of the year.”

Attendees at the kick-off will get to vote on their favorite from five choices of themes: Cartooning for a Cure (cartoon theme); Screening Out Cancer (movie theme); Wishing For A Cure (birthday theme); Planting The Seeds of Hope (farm theme), and “It’s Pastime for a Cure (hobby theme).

“Relay has always had some great sponsors over the years and on behalf of our board, we want to express our gratitude for all the support and assistance they continue to provide us,” Smith said.

“Of course, our sponsors are always welcome to attend and enjoy the kickoff. Any businesses or organizations interested in becoming sponsors and reaping the benefits of the publicity and community involvement, please come and learn how to get involved.”
