Lions gear up for Radio Day

The local “knights of the blind” will be charging into the Q-94 Studio come late October to wrestle control of the airwaves for one special day.

Greenville Lions Radio Day returns on Wednesday, October 27. The annual event is the civic organization’s sole fundraiser for its charities, most of which revolve around eradicating curable blindness throughout the world and in members’ own communities.

“The monies we raise help provide vision-saving surgeries, eye exams, eyeglasses. We support Lions Eye Foundation and Southeastern Guide Dogs for the Blind, Camp Seale-Harris for children with diabetes, one of the leading causes of blindness, along with other worthwhile causes,” said Lion Mac Russell.

Along with Lions reading ads for participating businesses, folks listening to the radio that day can call in to answer trivia questions read on-air for a chance to win a number of door prizes donated by supporters.

And of course, it wouldn’t Be Lions Radio Day without the annual Ugliest Man in Butler County Contest, with callers phoning in their votes between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

“The community really gets involved in this and it’s a lot of fun,” said Lion Ricky Cargile.

The “Ugliest Man” winner gets to ride on the (infamous) porcelain throne during the annual Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade through downtown Greenville.

During the coming weeks, Greenville Lions will be contacting local businesses to seek out donations for Radio Day. For a minimum $50 donation, participants’ ads will be read on the air at least two times by Lions volunteers.

“Of course, those businesses who do have ads and also donate door prizes will have their names called out additional times when we give these items away,” said Cargile.
