Heritage cook-off heats up Butler county

The 15th annual Butler County Heritage cook-off was hotter than July this year.

The Butler County Farmers Federation Women’s Leadership Committee hosted this exciting event again this year.

Chairperson Dixie Black encouraged all members of the Alabama Farmers Federation Association (ALFA) to come on down to the multipurpose room at the Walnut Street Church of Christ on Saturday.

The theme this year was chosen by the State Women’s Committee. Their pick: favorite meat sliders.

This year, first place went to Linda Rogers, with her Anytime Tailgate Sliders. She received the $75 top prize, and will advance to the 46th Annual Heritage Cooking contest in Montgomery on Thursday, September 8, at the Alfa Building in the RSA Tower.

Second place went to Debbie Owens with her Manwich Sliders. She received the $50 prize.

The main requirement to enter the cook-off is each contestant be a member of ALFA.

The contestants bring their best dish, already prepared, to be judged by a panel of hungry local experts.

No names were allowed on the dishes, only the ALFA membership number.

This left the three judges with nothing but their taste buds and tummies to make the decision.

After enjoying the entries, all three guest judges: Butler County Sheriff Danny Bond, Stacey Black and Nina Marie Lowery, were all in agreement on the clear winner.

Rogers’ is more than happy to share her Anytime Tailgate Slider winning recipe:

Anytime Tailgate Sliders

Ingredients:

12 King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls, split across

1 lb. honey ham, shaved

12 oz. Swiss or Provolone cheese, sliced

8 oz. container of Philadelphia chive and onion, or garden vegetable cream cheese, softened

1 stick butter, melted

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

1 ½ tsp. dried minced onion

 

Directions:

Lightly spray an 11×7 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Split the rolls across with a serrated knife and arrange the bottom half in the dish. Layer the ham and Swiss or Provolone cheese slices on top of ham. Spread the tops of the rolls with a layer of cream cheese. Carefully place the tops to match the bottoms of the rolls. In a small bowl, combine melted butter, Parmesan cheese, Worcestershire sauce and minced onion. Pour evenly over the sandwiches. Let this stand for about 20 minutes. Then, cover the dish with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, or until heated through. Enjoy!
