Coastal celebrates Arbor Day with MHS

In honor of National Arbor Day, Coastal Human Resources department partnered with McKenzie High School agriculture teacher, Ryan McNaughton, and two of the senior forestry students to plant a Cypress tree.  Blake Brown and Weston Kenney are true outdoorsmen who enjoy the forestry class taught by Mr. McNaughton.  The students shared they have learned a wealth of information of conserving and respecting the forests and its associated resources and were pleased to participate in National Arbor Day with Coastal.

“We are so excited to have this opportunity to partner with one of our local Butler County schools – McKenzie High School and its Forestry students,” Kristy Brown, Coastal Human Resource Manager.  “As we looked upon the students preparing the soil to plant the cypress tree it reminded me of the many blessings we have all around us with our forest lands and the many benefits we enjoy daily.  We will be reminded each year as we watch this cypress tree grow and mature of this special day.  As the tree grows, we look forward to decorating it each Christmas season for our team members to enjoy during the Christmas season.”

The first Arbor Day occurred on April 10, 1872, thanks to a Nebraska newspaper editor, J. Sterling Morton. It is estimated that one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. All 50 states now celebrate the national holiday, usually on the last Friday in April.

So, why is it important to plant trees? Trees remove carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen back into the air. They prevent soil erosion and provide habitats for wildlife. Trees cool the streets and cities, just imagine how hot Alabama would be with no trees! Trees provide countless products that we use everyday.

It is important to not only our needs but the needs of the environment, to maintain a balance in nature. Planting trees to replace those removed is a simple action we can all participate in.
