Earlier this season, the Wetumpka Indians took care of Greenville Middle School handily, but that wasn’t the case in Thursday night’s rematch.

The Tigers pulled off a 20-14 upset over the Indians on homecoming.

With Greenville ahead 14-6, Wetumpka tied the game with around three minutes to play.

Greenville started their drive at their own 35, and after marching to the one-yard line, a fumble gave the Indians the ball.

After Greenville used its final timeout to force the Indians to run one final play, Wetumpka fumbled and Greenville recovered it on the two-yard line.

Donte Lee punched the ball in with 15 seconds to play to give Greenville the lead, and an interception by Michael Smith sealed the game.

“Our boys played hard, and I’m very proud of that,” said head coach Josh McLendon. “They were undefeated, and I think they just overlooked us. We had been working hard about being physical and playing hard and leaving everything on the field, and that’s what they did.”

Harper Vinson took the opening kickoff of the game 80 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers an early lead.

“That set the tone for the whole night,” McLendon said. “Our defense came out with intensity, and they were all over the field.”

Halfway through the second quarter, facing fourth down and two yards to go, the Tigers pulled out some trickeration with a reverse pass from Vinson to Smith that went 50 yards for a touchdown to make the score 14-6.

“That was one of the greatest games I’ve ever seen, and certainly one of the best middle school games I’ve been a part of,” McLendon said.

Next week, the Tigers will travel to Troy to face off against Charles Henderson.

“We’ve got to get back up for Charles Henderson because we beat them, and they’re going to be like we were – looking for payback,” McLendon said.

In seventh grade action, the Tigers fell 14-6 to Wetumpka with Antonio Cook scoring for Greenville.
