Local students celebrate Arbor Day

The Greenville Tree Commission sponsored an Arbor Day Fair Tuesday. The occasion, of course, was Arbor Day.

The commision focused this year's fair on fifth graders.

That's fitting, since trees and our environment are becoming a more and more precious resource, and it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

Arbor Day was founded more than 100 years to establish a special day for tree planting each year.

Many states schedule the celebration of Arbor Day to coincide with the best tree-planting weather.

Alabama celebrates Arbor Week during the last full week of February.

We salute the Tree Commission on its investment in the youth of today, and leaders of tomorrow.
