Greenville gets new signs

Residents of Greenville may be seeing more traffic throughout the city, especially during the rest of the summer.

For almost a year, Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce President Carol Lee and Administrative Assistant Magoo Hamilton have been working to have a sign placed at the Greenville exit in an effort to steer travelers from Interstate 65 into the city to see for themselves the revitalization of downtown.

"We just want people to know that we have a viable and historic downtown," said Lee. "It's such a beautiful town and we just want everyone to see it."

To obtain the sign, both Lee and Hamilton approached Mac Russell, former director of the Alabama Department of Transportation, with the request. "We've been working on this for almost a year," said Hamilton. "We want everyone to see how beautiful Greenville is."

"I would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce for working so hard to get these signs. It is important that we utilize the interstate as much as possible to bring people into the city," said Mayor Dexter McLendon.

Although signs were requested for both exits 128 and 130, the Alabama Department of Transportation approved the signs only for Exit 130. "We are just happy that the Department of Transportation provided these signs for us," said McLendon.

The signs are posted both on the northbound and southbound exits on Interstate 65.
