The Greenville Academy Board of Directors announced last week that the school is currently searching for a new headmaster.

"David Walker announced in January his resignation as headmaster of Greenville Academy," said Phillip Graham, president of the Greenville Academy Board of Directors. "We held a general meeting on Feb. 12 and announced that the search for a new headmaster has already begun."

David Walker, a native of Palm Bay, Fla., assumed the positionin 1999. "I've been here for three years, and we all go through different stages, and it's just time for me to go to the next place," said Walker.

Walker said he has been working in education for almost 30 years. "I was in Escambia County for 11 years, Monroe County for 11 years, South Montgomery Academy for three years and here in Greenville for three years. I just think it's time to move on," explained Walker.

"You know, there are always rumors about the school closing, but that is just not the case," said Walker. "Greenville Academy is a good school and I hope to leave it a little better than it was when I got here. Greenville Academy will move forward and continue to progress."

Also at the meeting, Graham said an announcement was made that Jack Akin has been appointed as the new head football coach.

"I have been here as an assistant coach for two years. This is the first assistant position that I've had," said Akins.

Akins, who is originally from Atmore, Ala., is no stranger to high school football. "I was head coach at W.S. Neal in Brewton for ten years. I also coached at South Montgomery Academy and at Walton High in DeFuniak Springs, Fla."

When asked what he expects from the new position, he said, "We are expecting a lot of hard work out of the boys and hope to turn the program around."
