A crowd of young fishermen ambushed Sherling Lake Park Saturday morning.

The children were anxious to test their luck as they attempted to reel in ‘the big one’ during the second annual Kids Fishing Day held at Sherling Lake Park.

The event, co-sponsored by the City of Greenville, the Greenville Jaycees, Greenville Wal-Mart and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, grew from last year.

&uot;I thought it went really, really well,&uot; Wal-Mart Sporting Goods Manager Annie Pugh. &uot;It should continue to grow over the years because for the last two years it has definitely grown.&uot;

Wal-Mart provided hotdogs, chips, cookies and drinks to the young anglers throughout the four-hour event. Pugh hopes it shows the department store cares about today’s youths.

&uot;We hope events like this one will show that Wal-Mart is working with the community as best as it can,&uot; Pugh said.

The city and Jaycees each donated $500 to help make the event possible. The conservation department stocked the lake with a thousand pounds of catfish and netted the fishing area off.

&uot;Our department has lots of different programs involved with our Step Outside activities and we’re just trying to introduce young children to hunting and fishing,&uot; Don Reaves, a conservation officer for the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, said. &uot;Not everyone has some place to go, so we try to provide a day and introduce our young sportsmen to outside activities and give them a chance to learn how to do it. We hope they take up the sport.&uot;

Reaves agrees with Pugh that the second event surpassed the first.

&uot;We had a good turnout, all the children who participated seemed to have a real good time and we got some good, solid feedback from the community. I believe it was a real good day.&uot;

John Poole Jr., Kendedric Ingram and Tripp Richardson were winners of the rod and reel giveaway held at the end of the event.
