As reported Wednesday by the Andalusia Star-News, Dozier Manufacturing, one of the few remaining sewing operations in south Alabama, will be ceasing operations beginning in December.

In a brief statement, Nathanial Wright, vice president of the facility, confirmed the report.

&uot;We gave it our best shot, but it’s the same story with manufacturing everywhere,&uot; Wright said. &uot;We just ran out of options, unfortunately.&uot;

Beyond that, Wright would not comment, other than to say that what had already printed was essentially everything he had to say on the matter.

Employees were notified by a letter Tuesday, on company letterhead, signed by Wright, stating the situation for the facility. Employees signed a copy of the letter and returned it to management, acknowledging they had received and read it.

The closure of the facility in Dozier marks the end of a chapter in the small southern Crenshaw County town. A small community with a once vibrant industrial base of timber, banking, and textiles, the factory was one of the last hold outs for sewing in south Alabama.

In recent years, the factory had sewn parts of uniforms for workers at Walt Disney World and pants for college football coaches.
