Mr. Bill Spear will be retiring this week from his position as contractor of the Lapine Community Center.

Mr. Spear has held this post for over 20 years. The Central Alabama Aging Consortium, who serves the elderly throughout the state, appointed him as contractor. He has been a resident of this area for many years and his contribution to Lapine has been extraordinary.

On Tuesday, Mr. Spear was presented with a plaque for his many years of service. A replacement for Mr. Spear will be announced at a later date.

He will be greatly missed.

The Highland Home School PTA would like to thank everyone who contributed to the fall festival.

Acme Propane in Highland Home donated a turkey fryer. Anderson Peanuts in Goshen contributed a very generous amount of peanuts that was used for the many bags of peanut brittle Ms. Celia Gardner so graciously spent a great deal of time making. The Highland Home Bank donated a $50 savings bond. Ms. Jodi Tucker, who is an employee of the bank, donated $100 in the form of a Mary Kay gift package.

The surrounding area did a fabulous job providing everything needed for the fall festival. A tire company in Greenville supplied the bicycle that was raffled off. The Ramer Community was also very generous.

Ms. Debbie Duke would like to thank the parents who assisted in gathering these donations and helped out with all the other aspects of the festival.

Last week, an older gentleman came into the United Food and Fuel during Ms. Rebecca Jones shift. The man appeared very kind and asked Ms. Jones to help him with exchanging out some smaller bills for some larger ones. Like most of us, she was trusting and assisted the man with his request and even spoke to him about the safety issues involved with having the number of bills he had in his possession.

However, as soon as the man had walked out, Ms. Jones realized that he was a con artist and a theft had occurred. Another employee came in at this time and called the local police. However, due to some phone difficulties, it was very difficult for Ronnie White, the police officer who responded, to understand the description of the car or the individual.

White immediately started on his way to the store. Moments later, a better description came out over the radio and it was in fact the car that had been involved in the theft. They then gave pursuit of the vehicle, which was finally stopped by another police agent, officer Powell, in Brantley.

At this time, White and Robin Daniels apprehended the suspect and took him to the sheriff's office. It was then discovered that the suspect had at least 0 aliases and had been arrested before for homicide, as well as a wide range of other warrants. This suspect had a lengthy record and had finally been caught by our police!

Officers White and Daniels could be commended for the wonderful job they did that day.

Congratulations to the Highland Home Flying Squadron for making it the playoffs.

It was a heartbreaking ending to their season, but our team did a great job this season. We are very proud of you.

Seniors, remember this year with happiness. The rest of the team, we'll see you next year!
