When it comes to college football in Alabama, typically there are just two teams that come to mind.

There's Auburn and the University of Alabama.

Then there are the also-rans of college football like Troy Unviersity, UAB, Alabama State and West Alabama just to name a few.

But there is one school in this state that quietly has been producing a championship contending team year in and year out for almost a decade under its coach.

In the last six season's this football team has compiled a 57-13 record, which is better than what Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville has done in his six seasons at Auburn even after finishing last season with a 13-0 record.

In fact you could say that this football team is the winningest college program in the state.

So where is this bastion of football excellence?

Tuskegee.

That's right Division II Tuskegee University has been one of the most successful football programs in the last six years under its head coach Rick Comegy.

The Golden Tigers fell off the winning wagon last year after struggling to a 5-6 record, which was the first time Tuskegee had a losing season in seven seasons.

Now, Comegy has Tuskegee back on the winning track with a 4-0 record heading into a major Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown today with Albany State University.

Since Comegy took over as head coach at Tuskegee, he has led the Golden Tigers to four conference titles, an undefeated season and a Black College National Championship.

If you were to compare records of college football coaches around the state, including the late Paul "Bear" Bryant, Comegy would have the second-best winning percentage next to Bryant.

In the last six season's Comegy has a .814 winning percentage, which is just shy of Bryant's .847 winning percentage in his last six seasons at Alabama.

A winning percentage like makes Tommy Tuberville's .680 percentage in his six seasons on the Plains seem quite meager.

Looking at other coaches of Division 1-A schools within the state, Comegy has the best record. In the last six seasons at Troy, Larry Blakeney sports a .705 winning percentage. UAB coach Watson Brown doesn't even come close with a .507 mark.

So who is the best coach in the state?

If you look at the winning percentage, Comegy runs away with it.

And he wins with players that schools like Auburn, Alabama, Troy and UAB deem not good enough or athletic enough to play for their programs.

I know it's like comparing apples to oranges when you talk about these Division I-A schools and a Division II school. But what makes you raise an eyebrow about Tuskegee is that Comegy has had four players drafted by NFL teams in the last four years.

Obviously Comegy has got to be doing something right.

That's why he's the state's best college football coach.
