The Butler County Chapter of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life is steady as she goes, as volunteers from across the county prepare to go &#8220Cruisin' for a Cure.”

Teams Captain Ann Steiner Gregory said as of Thursday there are 31 teams signed up to participate in this year's Relay. The event is slated to kick off at 6 p.m., May 11 at the Greenville YMCA football field. Wal-Mart is returning as event sponsor with International Paper once again serving as luminaria sponsor.

There will be some new team tents on the field in 2007.

&#8220We have had some new teams join us this year, including First United Methodist Church of Greenville, Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church of Greenville and Hwashin, so we are very excited to see them all come on board and join us,” Gregory said.

Teams have been holding a variety of events to raise money for Relay – everything from bake sales, jump rope and hula hoop contests to yard sales, live concerts and other activities.

Today, the local Christian rock band KAOSS is performing a RFL fundraiser in front of the Dollar General Store on the Greenville By-pass. The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is co-sponsored by Dollar General, Greenville Motor Co. and Cummings Signs.

&#8220We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy some great music while supporting a very worthwhile cause, the continued fight against cancer,” Charles Haigler of Greenville Motor Co., said.

This afternoon, a motorcycle poker run sponsored by the Harley's Angels RFL team will be held between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. with registration at 1 p.m.

The event starts and ends at MDBP Service Station at Hwy 10 and I-65, with stops at a number of businesses around the Camellia City.

Next Saturday, April 21, a special RFL event will be held in conjunction with the Main Street Concerts in the Park series.

As the Alabama Gravy Soppers of Montgomery perform that night, more than 25 ladies from across the area will be sacrificing their ponytails for Locks of Love and Expressions of Love, organizations that provide cancer patients with wigs.

Concessions will be sold with all proceeds going to the 2007 Relay For Life. The music kicks off at 6 p.m. in Confederate Park.

Regarding sponsorship monies for Relay, Francine Wasden, sponsorship co-chairperson, said on Thursday more than $15,000 had already been collected &#8220with more coming in everyday.”

&#8220We will soon be sending out some 3,000 letters to members of the community and beyond who have supported us in various ways in the past. We appreciate everyone's help and are looking forward to a great event,” Wasden said.

In other Relay news, the annual Cancer Survivors Luncheon is slated for 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 5 at the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church in Greenville.

The goal for this year's event in Butler County is $100,000.
