Tigers win in an onslaught

The Luverne Tigers picked up win number 3 at home last Friday night as they dismantled the Calhoun Tigers 68 to 12. In doing so, the Tigers scored more points than any other Luverne team in past memory, possibly even the most ever. The Tigers scored early and often as they used 11 backs to gain a total of 333 yards on the ground and scored 8 touchdowns.

Luverne started the scoring early after they stopped Calhoun and forced a 3 and out. The Tiger TD came after a 3-play drive that covered 36 yards. The touchdown came on a 15 yard run by Chad Free. Robert Freeman kicked the PAT to put the Tigers up by 7. The next Tiger TD came on their next possession. It came on a 24 yard run by Lance Brooks after a 3 play, 50-yard drive. Freeman again kicked the PAT for a 14-point lead.

The next TD came on a 21 yard run by Justin Ray over right tackle. Again Freeman added the PAT for a 21-point lead with 3 minutes left in the first quarter. The final Tiger TD of the first quarter came after a turnover on a bad punt snap as the Tigers took over on the Calhoun 7 yard line. The score came on a second and 5 as Chad Free took the ball and slid into the end zone behind beautiful blocking on the right side of the ball. The PAT was missed, and as the first quarter ended, the Tigers had a 27-point lead.

The second quarter started as the first ended, with the Tigers mounting a 6 play drive that covered 58 yards. The touchdown came on a 1 yard run by Justin Ray, but the PAT failed. The final TD of the first half came after an 8-play drive that covered 60 yards. The score came on a 3-yard pass from Monterio May to Bakari Burnette. Adam Foster kicked the PAT. The Tigers picked up a safety also in the second quarter as the Calhoun snapper snapped the ball over the punter’s head on a punt attempt. The Tigers had amassed a total of 177 yards of offense in the first half while holding the visitors to 34 yards in the air and a minus 85 on the ground.

The third quarter started as the first ended with Luverne dominating the line of scrimmage. The first Tiger TD came on a Lenny Brooks’ run of 20 yards. The TD ended a 9-play drive that covered 65 yards. Adam Foster kicked the PAT for a 34 to 0 Luverne Tiger lead.

The next Tiger score came after a 47 yard, 2-play drive. Lenny Brooks got the score on a 28 yard run, but the PAT was missed. With 3 minutes left in the third quarter, the Tigers had a 55 to 0 lead.

Calhoun scored in the third quarter on a pass to help their morale. Luverne added two more scores in the fourth quarter. The first was on a 12 yard run by Darren Foster. It ended a 6 play drive that covered 66 yards. Adam Foster kicked the Tigers to a 62-point lead. The final Tiger TD came on an 80 yard kick off return after the visitors had scored against the Tigers’ second and third teamers. Devin McGhee took the kick in at the Tiger 20, broke several attempts from would-be tacklers, and raced 80 yards for the final Tiger score of the night. The PAT was missed, but the Tigers had a 68 to 12 lead.

Defensive leaders for Luverne were Desmond Harrell and Darren Foster with 4 tackles each. Monterio May had 1 tackle and one pass interception. Micah Wallace led the Tigers on offense with 64 yards in 6 carries, and Justin Ray had 42 yards in 6 carries. Darren Foster had 58 yards on 6 carries. May was 5 of 9 passing for 81yards and 1 TD.

The Luverne Tigers travel to Montgomery this week to play Alabama Christian Academy. Kick off is 7 p.m.
