Greenville’s Thursday night game against Carver had an interesting and rather abrupt end in the fifth inning when the stadium lights went out due to scheduled maintenance by Alabama Power.

The outage wasn’t a surprise, but head coach Brad Horn said he didn’t find out about it until mid-afternoon.

“I went and asked them to let us finish the game, but they said no,” Horn said.

At 6:15, which came during the bottom of the fifth inning, the lights went out and the coaches were left with a couple of options.

“It could be official after five innings, but they asked us to continue, and I’m not going to say no to that,” Horn said.

The game was suspended and will resume when Greenville travels to Carver on March 17.

Before the lights went out, Greenville led 8-5.

Carver started the game with a home run in the top of the first inning, but Hunter Harrell reached base for the Tigers on an infield single in the bottom of the inning.

Jay Johnson, Harrell’s courtesy runner, came in to tie the game on a passed ball.

Greenville pitcher Josh Ray got into a jam in the third inning, and the Tigers went into the bottom of the inning down 5-1.

Nick Johnson got on base for Greenville with a bunt, and a pitch hit Harrell, the next batter.

Raymond Moody came to the plate and put in a tough at bat.

After fouling off at least five pitches, Moody finally connected with one and sent it over the left field fence to put Greenville down 5-4.

Greenville then loaded the bases with no outs, but couldn’t put any runs on the board until Ryan Smith came up with two outs.

Smith put a single into right field that brought in two runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers added two more runs — one came on an infield grounder by Ray and the other came on a line drive down the left field line by Rush Nimmer.

Horn said the suspension of the game shouldn’t affect his team.

In fact, he said it will probably help them.

“We’ll be able to pick up with the same pitcher,” he said. “We won’t have to worry as much about pitch counts because it’ll be a different week and we’ll have played fewer games.”

“On the other hand, it’ll help them too with a fresher pitcher,” Horn added. “I’ve been in a situation with a suspended game before, and we’ve just got to get focused.”

Greenville will travel to Thomasville today to face off against Thomasville and Demopolis.
