Eagles shut out Pike in finale

The Fort Dale softball team ended their 2009 season last week with a 1-0 win at Pike Liberal Arts.

Head coach Scarlett Anderson said it was the team’s defense that got them the win.

“The defense was great,” she said. “We didn’t hit too well, but the defense won it.”

The Eagles also got a strong pitching performance from Katie Wilson, who struck out eight Patriots.

The Eagles’ run came in the fifth inning after a couple of key hits.

Anne Blake Langford reached base on a fly ball to short left field, and Tosh Taylor followed with a hit to the outfield that was dropped by the right fielder.

Langford was running on the play and scored.

The Eagles didn’t expect that to be their last game, but that turned out to be the case after the games against Morgan and Sparta were cancelled.

Both of those teams were involved in playoff seeding games in the early part of the week.

With the cancellation of those games, the Eagles also lost a chance to have Senior Day.

“We didn’t get to do Senior Day, and that’s disappointing,” Anderson said. “I didn’t know that the game against Pike was the last game, but I’m glad that we won our last one.”

Third baseman Jordan Peavy is the only senior on the team, and Anderson said they’re already looking forward to next year.

“I hate that we ended the season without the playoffs, but we can work on what we need to do to get there,” she said. “We’ll reorganize and make it better next year.”
