New projects are right around the corner for the Helicon Community Association (HCA) as members get ready to build handicap accessible ramps for two Helicon residences.

The group began holding fundraisers for such projects in February, said HCA member Joe Foster. A community pancake breakfast was later held at the Helicon Community Center.

“We got around $600 from that,” Foster said.

And, with that money, the association now has enough for the two projects, with plans to raise more money to continue to help those in need in Helicon.

“Once we get started and the community sees we are actually doing something to help, we feel like more people will donate and help us to help others,” Foster said.

The association’s first project includes the installation of wheelchair ramps at the home of Stacy Stringer, who has a physically challenged child who rides the school bus every day.

“We’ll start on her home this Saturday,” Foster said.

A second project is planned for Clara Berry, whose bedridden mother needs wheelchair access at her home to facilitate doctor visits.

“We have quite a few members in the association, but we’re always looking for more members and volunteers,” Foster said.
