MONTGOMERY – Luverne native Corey Hale was named Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and was joined as a First-Team All-Conference member by University of Mobile teammates Braxton Hamil and Dakota Spikes.

In all, the University of Mobile baseball team had 14 student-athletes honored with the release of the 2015 SSAC baseball awards Tuesday evening.

Trey Cockrell and Tayler Hardy earned Second-Team All-Conference honors, Norberto Torres was named All-Freshman and Spikes and Roman Testani were named to the Gold Glove Team.

Hardy, Testani, Cooper Esslinger, Dane Howard, Payne Palmwer, Zach Robinson, Charlie Stevenson and Travis Tessandori earned SSAC All-Academic honors. Jacob Hyde was the team’s Champions of Character selection.

Hale has turned in one of the best seasons in school history, sitting at 13-1 with a 1.37 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 85.1 innings on the mound. Opponents are hitting only .197 against him and he has tallied five complete games. Hale was named SSAC Pitcher of the Week four times. He is the sixth Ram all-time to be named conference pitcher of the year and the first since Justin Bracewell in 2008.

He is one win shy of tying the school’s single-season record, his ERA is the fourth-best mark in school history and he is only the third pitcher to reach triple-digit strikeouts in a season. The lefty has six double-digit strikeout outings, including tying J.C. Romero’s school record with 15 against Middle Georgia.

Hamil leads Mobile with a .412 batting average, 73 hits, 24 doubles, six home runs, 54 RBIs, a .672 slugging percentage and a .520 on-base percentage. He is second in the NAIA with those 24 doubles. He becomes the third Ram all-time to be named First-Team All-Conference three times.

He is a career .367 hitter with 257 hits, 157 runs, 197 RBIs and 71 doubles. He leads Mobile in career doubles and RBIs, is second in hits and fourth in runs scored. His current on-base percentage is tied for the third-best single-season mark in school history. The first baseman leads the SSAC in average and doubles and is second in on-base percentage, slugging percentage and RBIs.

Spikes is batting .359 with 66 hits, 16 doubles, five home runs, 46 RBIs, a .538 slugging percentage and a .427 on-base percentage. He set the school record with three home runs in a single game at Talladega. He has 20 multi-hit games this season and has posted a .948 fielding percentage with 115 assists at third base.

Hardy has ignited the offense from the leadoff spot, hitting .355 with 71 hits, 63 runs scored, a .444 on-base percentage and 44 stolen bases. He leads the Rams in runs and steals, and is sixth and third, respectively in the NAIA in those categories. His 44 steals is the second-most in school history.

Cockrell, a relief pitcher, has saved seven games for the Rams to go along with a 2.61 ERA and three victories in 41.1 innings. He has appeared in 27 games out of the bullpen and has held opponents to a .229 batting average with 20 strikeouts and only 10 walks.

Torres, a second baseman has appeared in 51 of 52 games as a freshman, making 39 starts. He is batting .270 with a .384 on-base percentage, 37 hits and 42 runs scored.
