In only the third week of the season, the Fort Dale volleyball team is already facing a tough task — the Lee-Scott Warriors.

“Lee-Scott is such a good team,” said head coach Scarlett Anderson. “We’re going to need to bring our a-game, and we’re busy working on that.”

The first two weeks have been good for the Eagles, who kicked off the year with a pre-season tournament at Crenshaw Christian.

“Those games didn’t count, but it was good practice for us,” Anderson said. “We went against some very tough competition.”

That tough competition included Enterprise Prep, who went 43-0 last year and was named national champions.

In the first match that counted, the JV lost to Evangel while the varsity won.

“Our JV is a really young team, and they’ve got a lot to learn,” Anderson said.

The FDA JV pulled out a win over Meadowview in their second match, and Anderson said she was impressed by the play of Laikyn Anderson.

“She had two aces, and she’s never played before,” Anderson said. “The highlight was when she jumped up over the net and blocked a ball.”

The varsity fell in a hole early against Meadowview, but they were able to pull out a win 24-26, 21-25, 25-23, 25-14 and 15-12.

“We came back fighting and did a wonderful job,” Anderson said. “We’re playing hard and getting better and hopefully that’ll be come a habit. We’ve got a lot of leaders and we’re also hoping that’ll come out.”

The Eagles have also been adjusting to the change from a 6-2 offensive system to a 5-1 system.

That means that instead of two setters, FDA will instead rely on Karli Boulware to be the main setter.

“We’re still tweaking that, but it’s working well,” Anderson said. “Our goal this week is to stay undefeated, and ultimately we’re looking to get back to the playoffs.”

The JV will kick off Thursday’s home action against LSA at 4 p.m.
