Let’s talk about civic engagement for just a minute. Why is it important for you as a citizen to get involved with community activities, fundraisers and other events? Because it not only helps your community grow and prosper, it helps you as an individual to grow and prosper.

When you give back to your community, you are giving back a bit of yourself. Yes, yes we know that sounds cheesy and cliché, but when you think about it it’s true.

Each person in a community has so many talents, gifts and unique attributes. When you see what all you personally have to offer, why would you not want to contribute? Why would you not want to put your own unique flare into a project?

Another great thing about getting involved is that you know your voice is heard. If you never get out and participate, when the time comes for you to voice your opinion, sometimes it’s hard to abe heard. But if you are already established as an active player in the betterment of the community, not only will your voice be heard, you also may have the ability to influence change.

No matter what your talents are, they can be used to make a greater impact. If you are an amazing artist, paint the backdrops in the next community theater project. If you are a talented writer, write up a review of the basketball game from last night and submit it to the local paper. If you love to sing, join the community choir, or even offer voice lessons to those in the community who share your enthusiasm.

No talent is too small to make an impact. All it takes is a bit of courage to step forward and volunteer, and then it takes dedication to remain active even when life gets hectic.

Trust us, community involvement is one of the best jobs a citizen can have. Without you guys, there is no community. Without your support, we cannot grow. And don’t you want to leave a legacy for your children, grandchildren, younger brothers and sisters? When they see you getting involved, even in the smallest way, that can echo deeply in their lives. Before you know it, they will be volunteering to design the sets, or they will be taking the time to teach another student how to sing or play an instrument.

Involvement is contagious. Once one person jumps on that bandwagon, it’s only a matter of time before you have a whole ensemble ready and willing to play.

So, do your part for your community. Without you, there can be no growth. Without you, there is no community.
