Georgiana basketball camp set for June 1
Georgiana School’s annual Summer Youth Basketball Camp is an event one could set a watch by, and this year’s event continues the years-long tradition on June 1.
The camp, which enters its ninth year, will be held from 8 a.m. until noon from June 1-3.
Held for boys and girls ages 8-14, the camp will feature fundamental basketball skills taught by Georgiana High School basketball staff and players.
Georgiana head basketball coach Kirk Norris has been overseeing the camp for nearly a decade; and though the boys and girls that enter his camp come and go, the camp’s goal never changes.
“We try to teach them the skills to be successful while playing the game of basketball,” Norris said.
“We try and do this by making it fun and enjoyable for them. Basically, they are learning skills while having fun doing it.”
And few basketball programs in the area are as associated with winning as the Panthers. The varsity boys team ended last year with its most impressive record in school history, making it to the championship round (another first for the school’s history).
Georgiana’s annual camp is more substance over style, as it focuses on key basketball skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting and defense.
The camp will also feature daily competitions and game play that include gotcha, hot shot, free throw contests and full-court, five-on-five games.
For nine years, the camp has provided the county’s youth an opportunity to hit the hardwood with some of the best current and former talent to grace R.L. Austin Gymnasium, and this year’s roster of coaches don’t look to buck that trend.
Former and returning players as well as coaches will round out this year’s roster of camp overseers.
The cost to attend is $25 per camper, and each camper will receive a Georgiana Basketball Camp T-shirt. The deadline to register is May 20 to guarantee a T-shirt on the final day.
Late registration will be held on Wednesday, June 1 prior to camp.
All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Georgiana High School basketball program.
