Georgiana teams take first in Thanksgiving tournament

The Georgiana boys and girls varsity teams swept the Panthers-hosted 2014 Thanksgiving Clash tournament, held Nov. 25-26.
The varsity boys Panthers team proved victorious over the Goshen Eagles 72-60 in the championship game of the tournament, and Georgiana improved to 3-0 in the process.
Richard Boggan led all Panthers with a double-double performance of 22 points and 16 rebounds.
Jacquez Payton added 19 points to the total, and Nizaiah Smith and Devin McMeans each contributed 12 and 10 points respectively.
Zach Alford led the 1-1 Goshen Eagles with 19 points, and Qua Simmons and Azontae Rodgers added 18 and 11 points respectively.
Boggan was also recognized as the tournament’s most valuable player.
Georgiana’s Jacquez Payton, Travales Smith and Qua Simmons were recognized as all-tournament players, as well as Goshen’s Alford, Highland Home’s Tay Fuller and WS Neal’s DJ Hodges.
The varsity girls had similar success for Georgiana, as the team defeated Southside Selma 39-26 in the championship game.
Tyanna Perkins and Miya Riley led the 3-0 Panthers with 16 and 15 points respectively.
Calvondrea Blackmon posted 5 points for Southside Selma.
Perkins was also recognized as tournament MVP.
Miya Riley and Courtney Powell were also recognized as all-tournament players as well as Calvondrea Blackmon and Yasmine Mison for Southside Selma, Shayla Allen from Highland Home and Keke Floyd from WS Neal.
The Georgiana boys and girls served as host for Opp Tuesday, Dec. 2, but results were not available as of press time.
The Panthers teams will be hitting the road Thursday for the Straughn Christmas Tournament on Dec. 4-6.
