Lowery is a Butler County native, having graduated from Georgiana High School, and he attended Troy University.

His coaching career spanned more than 25 years, with the final year culminating in a championship run with Brantley, where he spent the last 14 of his coaching years.

Lowery added that the 2012 season was very special to him because he had coached defense throughout his career and had his best unit that season.

The Bulldogs recorded 10 shutouts—including four in the playoffs—to cap the 15-0 season.

This also happened to be his son’s senior year, and Lowery had been with the same group through Little League, Pee-Wee and varsity football.

Football seemed to be a family affair, with Lowery’s other son, Trey, as the young manager and wife, Kim, also teaching at Brantley.

This was his only undefeated team.

Lowery credits much of his success with being fortunate to have worked with older coaches, beginning his career at Elba High School being the young man on staff with head coach Mack Wood, a hall of famer, and other veteran coaches.

Going from Elba to Brantley, he found great community support and hard-working players who would set the foundation that resulted in two state championships and two runners-up for state titles after having experienced two state championships at Elba while serving there as an assistant.

His first Brantley team won the first 14 games, but lost to Courtland in the state title game in Birmingham.

His overall career resulted in winning 85 percent of games played (156-27).

While 2012 was his last season of coaching, Lowery was the director of operations for Crenshaw County Schools for the past two years.

His retirement became official on July 31, 2014.

Lowery is the son of the late James R. Lowery and Mr. and Mrs. Judson Garner of Georgiana.

He is married to the former Kim Kelly of Elba and father of two sons, Andrew and Trey Lowery of Brantley.

Upon retirement, he also had the Brantley football field named in his honor as David Lowery Field.
