FDA Athletics Club hosts annual golf tournament

The Fort Dale Academy Athletics Club is hosting its annual four-person scramble golf tournament Saturday at Cambrian Ridge.
The annual tournament, which is approaching its 10th anniversary, was started to generate extra funds to support the school’s athletics department.
Last year’s tournament featured 58 golfers and raised more than $9,000.
Marty Whigham, a member of the Fort Dale Athletic Club and one of the tournament’s organizers, said that last year’s numbers were down from those in the past, but he would still consider the event a success.
“We didn’t have as many golfers last year as we did in the past, but there was the right amount of people there; God provided the right amount of people,” Whigham said.
“We’re thankful for everybody that contributes their time and their effort.”
The club is also calling on the aid of local businesses, offering a sponsor hole for $100 that allows for a given business’s sign to be placed out by one of the holes on the course that will be visible to all participants.
The entry fee for this year’s tournament is $100 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, the use of a cart, range balls, use of the practice green, a lunch at the conclusion of the tournament and a chance at winning future rounds of golf at Cambrian Ridge and door prizes provided by various local businesses.
Though it’s recommended that entrants register as four-man teams, individuals can register to be placed on a team.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, including awards offered for the ball hit closest to the pin and longest drive in both the men’s and women’s division.
And though the stakes are as high as ever—including a potential prize totaling $500 thanks to a donation—Whigham’s advice to all participants is to just have fun, regardless of their skill or familiarity with the sport.
“A lot of these ladies and guys that come out have never played,” Whigham added.
“They’re going out for the fun of it, or because they like playing golf and it gives them a day to do so with their friends and support the school on top of it.”
The registration deadline is May 9.
Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., the driving range opens at 7 a.m. and shotgun starts at 8 a.m.
