The fast-paced style of traditional Korean painting will be demonstrated at LBW Community College in Andalusia on Feb. 18, 2014, when Ki-son Ryu demonstrates how to create a masterpiece in just minutes.

The Korean native, who lives and works in Luverne and is a member of the LBWCC Community Leaders Diversity Committee, studied under Hak Hee Baek, master Korean ink-wash instructor in the Capital City.

Ryu has shared his love of the art style through demonstrations at LBWCC in Luverne, and recently visited the Andalusia campus in preparation of the upcoming event.

“I want to be able to educate people on Korean paintings,” he said. “It’s good for everyone to understand what Korean culture is like.”

Misti Purvis, LBWCC art instructor, said she and her students are excited about this opportunity.

“Art students will have the chance to first watch the demonstration, and then try to create a painting,” she said.

“This is such a wonderful opportunity to have this type of exposure to a different technique and a different culture.”

This type of ink-based painting is fast and leaves no room for mistakes, said Ryu.

“It requires a lot of concentration so you don’t mess up,” he said.

His works have been featured at Auburn University in Montgomery and at the Luverne Public Library.

The demonstration will take place in the Jeff Bishop Student Center, 9:30-11 a.m. on Feb. 18. It is free and open to the public. For more information, call 334-881-2256.
