Tuscaloosa Academy head coach William Johnson, a 1996 graduate of Fort Dale Academy, got the best of his former school and coach Monday night in the championship game of the Class AAA, Region 2 tournament.

Johnson, who played three seasons for Fort Dale head coach Reggie Mantooth, led the Knights to a 61-45 win over the Eagles.

Johnson spent three years as the head coach at Fort Dale following Mantooth’s departure for Class 6A Oak Mountain High School in 2007. Johnson left Fort Dale for Pike Liberal Arts School in Troy before taking over the Tuscaloosa program. Johnson’s departure from Fort Dale opened the door for Mantooth to return to the school where he has won five state championships.
