Georgiana School defeated Pleasant Home High School 42-22 Friday night in Andalusia.

The Panthers’ 42 points is the most points scored by Georgiana since a 42-30 win over Florala High School in 2011.

“We jumped out on them early and took a 22-0 lead, and then being a young team we got a little complacent,” first-year head coach Ezell Powell said. “We messed around and Pleasant Home got back in the game, but our guys fought and were able to stretch the game back out.”

Powell said the Panthers’ offensive explosion was led by sophomore quarterback Jacquez Payton, who rushed for 140 yards.

Senior Latrell Seals added 75 yards rushing and junior Alen Smith chipped in 60 yards receiving.

“Those guys led us, but we had a lot of guys chip in to help us get the win,” Powell said. It was a group effort, and I’m proud of the guys.”

With the win, the Panthers improve to 3-3 on the season and 1-3 in Class 1A, Region 2.

The win also marks the first time since 2009 that the Panthers have won back-to-back games.

““I hope we developed a little confidence,” Powell said. “Putting together wins isn’t something that’s been done here in a number of years, so we’re having to learn how to expect to win. I think tonight will help our guys see that they can do it.”

Georgiana will be back in action next Friday when it plays host to Red Level High School. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
