A week of fun in the sun served McKenzie well.
Coming off spring break, the Tigers opened the second half of their season with a dominating 11-4 win over Class 5A Wilcox Central High School on Monday. It was McKenzie’s first game since March 22.
McKenzie head coach Tony Norris said there’s always a concern coming off such a long break, but that he believes the break was good for his squad.
“Sometimes it’s good to get away and get a little break from (baseball) to get rejuvenated,” Norris said. “I think the break was a good thing for us.”
Norris said he was particularly pleased with the performances of his pitchers, who combined to strike out 14 batters
“I pitched a lot of guys in order to get them some work,” Norris said.
Condie Pugh earned the win on the mound for the Tigers.
Norris was also pleased with his teams play at the plate, although he admitted he was surprised at how well the Tigers hit the ball coming off the break.
“We had times where I didn’t like our approach at the plate, but overall I felt like we had a good day at the plate.”
Ben Presley led the Tigers with a 3-for-4 effort that included an RBI. Nicarius Peterson was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Zeke Powell and Tanner Davis each drove in a run.
