McKenzie High School made it look easy Tuesday night.
The Lady Tigers scored 34 first-half points en route to a 62-28 win over Class 3A Excel High School.
“We played hard from start to finish,” McKenzie head coach Ezell Powell said.
McKenzie led 16-2 after the first eight minutes of play and carried a 34-12 lead into the break. The Lady Tigers squashed any threat of an Excel comeback in the third period by outpacing the Lady Panthers 25-6 to extend their lead to 59-18.
“We played a lot of young players in the fourth,” Powell said.
McKenzie’s offensive charge was led by Dazia Womack’s 24 points.
Powell said the Lady Tigers’ offense is centered around Womack.
“We try to see how the other team is going to play her and we make small adjustments on how we are going to get her the ball,” he said. “When most teams double team her it allows other players around her to get open looks at good shots.”
On Tuesday, Brittany Gard and Lotoria Womack were able to take advantage of those open looks. Both players scored 14 points.
“Brittany and Lotoria have done a good job of hitting shots,” Powell said.
