Demopolis High School defeated Greenville High School 62-59 Friday night in Demopolis.
The game was closely contested throughout.
With 2:07 to play, Demopolis trailed by four, but brought it even with under a minute to go. With 40.8 seconds left and the game tied at 57, D’metric Howell made one of two free throws to give Demopolis a one-point lead.
Demopolis put Greenville on the line with 20 seconds to play, and they made one of two free throws. Greenville was able to grab the offensive rebound with 15.7 seconds left, but a steal and a foul put Roderick Davis on the line for Demopolis. He made both to give Demopolis a 60-58 lead. Greenville went down the court and drew a foul, but Demetrius Kemp came up with a big rebound and Davis was sent back to the free throw line.
Davis made both shots to give Demopolis a three-point lead, 62-59. On the inbounds play, Cortez Lewis came up with a steal to seal the game.
Demopolis scored 27 of its 62 points in the game’s final eight minutes.
Demopolis head coach Rodney Jackson said the difference in the fourth quarter was how his team attacked.
“I told them to attack more because I knew we had them in foul trouble,” he said. “Roderick was huge for us, and him and Tommy (Wilson) are the staple of this team. I’m extremely happy right now. The ball rolled our way tonight.”
