Oikle leads Panthers to win

Georgiana School senior Justin Oikle recorded a double-double to help propel the eighth-ranked Panthers to a 62-43 win over Sweetwater High School Saturday night in Georgiana.

Oikle finished with 15 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks.

Georgiana head coach Kirk Norris said Oikle is just the third player he’s coached at Georgiana to reach 20 rebounds in a single game.

Senior Cameron Matthews also scored 15 points in the victory, while freshman Jacquez Payton added 10 points and sophomore Travales Smith chipped in 10 points.

Sweetwater was led by Daniel Sewell’s 15 points.

The Panthers (14-5) dropped their first area contest of the season Friday night when they lost 67-42 to Brantley High School.

Georgiana trailed 15-9 after the first quarter and 29-17 at halftime.

During the third quarter, the Panthers went cold from the field, only tallying six points.

Brantley caught fire at the same time, scoring 23 points in the quarter and extending the lead to 52-23.

Georgiana made a slight comeback in the fourth quarter, but Brantley held on for the win.

Payton led the Panthers with 11 points, while Oikle added six points.

Georgiana will travel to face J.F. Shields High School Friday night. B-team action will begin at 5 p.m. with varsity action set to follow.
