Quick start propels Eagles past Sparta

Fort Dale Academy raced out to a 16-3 first-period lead, and never looked back en route to a 60-49 win over Sparta Academy Monday night in Evergreen.
Fort Dale’s Jack Bates scored 12 points and yanked down 11 rebounds to help power the Eagles to the season-opening win.
Bates, who connected on 6-of-10 shots from the field, also blocked three shots.
Wesley Scott scored a team-high 14 points, while Chip Taylor added 13 points and and five steals and Taylor Windham chipped in 9 points in the win.
As a team, the Eagles shot 46 percent from the field and forced Sparta into 13 turnovers.
FDA will be back in action Monday when it takes on Lowndes Academy. Junior varsity action will begin at 4 p.m. with the varsity set to follow.
Lady Eagles fall in opener
Sparta Academy edged Fort Dale Academy 55-50 in the Lady Eagles’ season opener on Monday night in Evergreen.
Fort Dale led by seven after one period of play, but Sparta rallied to take the lead in the second period and took advantage of 23 Fort Dale turnovers to seize the win.
Anne Matthews led the Lady Eagles with 19 points, 6 rebounds and four assists. She connected on 6-of-12 shots from the field and 7-of-10 free-throw attempts.
Theresa Scott scored six points and pulled down a team-high 21 rebounds, while Nedra Toulmin Crosby and Caroline Snellgrove scored 15 points and 6 points, respectively.
