Registration deadline nearing for gator hunts

Alabama’s own version of “Swamp People” is set to take place in August, but before the gator hunters can take to the water there’s some work to be done with a keyboard and mouse.

Would-be hunters must apply for one of the 295 tags that will be issued as part of the state’s seventh regulated alligator hunting season. Registration is underway. It ends Friday at 8 a.m.

When registration closes, the 295 hunters will be randomly chosen by computer to receive one Alligator Possession Tag each. The cost is $6 to apply and hunters may register multiple times. Only Alabama residents age 16 years or older may apply. To register visit outdooralabama.com.

The alligator hunts will be held on August 16-18 and August 23- 25 in the Mobile Tensaw Delta and west central Alabama, and on August 10-26 for the southeast Alabama area.

Each person receiving an Alligator Possession Tag will be allowed to harvest one alligator 6 feet in length or longer.
