Panthers, Eagles move up in poll

Georgiana School climbed two spots in the most recent Alabama Sports Writers Association prep basketball poll to crack the top five for the first time this season.
The Panthers (13-3) moved from No. 6 in Class 1A to No. 4, despite a first-round loss at the Capital City Conference tournament to then-No. 3 St. Jude (13-1), which climbed to No. 2 after winning the tournament.
Georgiana is ranked behind Pickens County (10-2), St. Jude, and R.A. Hubbard (8-2).
Fort Dale Academy found its way into the poll for the first time this season with a No. 8 ranking.
The Eagles (10-3), who recently won the FDA Christmas Tournament and two games at the Border Wars Tournament hosted by Glenwood School, entered the poll at No. 8.
Fort Dale head coach Reggie Mantooth said his team won’t discuss the ranking, but he hopes it will serve as motivation for his team.
“I think it is a good recognition for what our team has done so far this season,” Mantooth said. “I also think it should motivate our guys to keep improving.”
Fort Dale Academy’s girls’ team, which has been ranked since the first poll of the season was released Dec. 8, dropped out of the top 10.
