Greenville Middle School opened its 2011 campaign with an 8-6 victory against Luverne Tuesday night.
“It was a very physical game,” first-year head coach Daniel Ingram said. “Luverne was ready to play.”
Luverne staked claim to an early lead by intercepting a Greenville pass and returning it 83 yards for a touchdown.
Greenville defense stopped the extra point.
“Our defense pitched a shutout,” Ingram said.
The Greenville offense made up for the early miscue with a touchdown run by Dequarius Peterson to knot the game at 6-all.
Greenville took the lead when Barrett Bush connected with Timmy McCall for the two-point conversion.
“Bush had two interceptions on the day, but his completion on the two-point conversion was the difference maker,” Ingram said.
Greenville prepped for its season opener by winning three games at a preseason jamboree hosted by Wetumpka.
The Tigers defeated Wetumpka’s 7th grade team 12-0.
Peterson and Bush each rushed for a touchdown in the win.
Greenville edged Dauphin Middle School 8-7 thanks to a two-point conversion pass from Bush to McCall following a Peterson scoring run.
The Tigers topped Marbury 14-6. Peterson and Bush also rushed for a touchdown in that win.
Greenville will take a week off before jumping back into action against Wetumpka on Sept. 8.
