Austin Anderson’s 69-yard touchdown run with 3:03 left in the game secured a 20-13 victory for Morgan over Fort Dale on Friday night in Greenville.

Anderson dropped the ball on a sweep play, but picked it up to scamper nearly untouched through the FDA defense for what proved to be the game winning score.

The game was a practice contest for both teams. FDA opens the season at home on Friday night against Glenwood. Morgan plays at Tuscaloosa Academy.

Both teams alternated their first and second strings. The Eagles’ offense was driving for a potential game-tying touchdown, but lost the ball on downs at the Morgan 20-yard line.

Hunter Armstrong went 7-of-16 for 57 yards passing in two quarters of work. He also rushed for 58 yards. Freshman Chip Taylor threw for 61 yards and added 45 yards on the ground.

The Eagles led at halftime on the strength of two one-yard runs by Manny Norrell and Matthew Bender.

Morgan tied the ballgame with 2:46 left in the third quarter after blocking a Fort Dale punt and running it 36 yards for the touchdown.

Lightning and heavy rain forced a delay in the second half before play could continue.

Glenwood has a new coach in Jason Allen. FDA head coach James “Speed” Sampley said, of the 10 teams the Eagles face this season, six of those teams have new coaches.

“So we really don’t know what to expect from anyone,” he said. “We just have to concentrate on ourselves and getting better at what we want to do.”
