This year’s event features 17 teams, and each team will also be recognized during the Opening Ceremonies.

A special event, Locks of Love, will begin at 8 p.m.

“Several people from the county will have their hair cut for this event,” said county coordinator Cathy Wilkes. “The hair will then be donated to the charity Locks of Love to make wigs for patients undergoing chemotherapy.”

One of the most moving events will be the Lumanaria Ceremony, which will begin at 9 p.m.

“This is a candlelight ceremony in which the names of cancer survivors and those who lost their battle to cancer will be honored,” Wilkes said.

The theme of this year’s event is “Tune in for a Cure.”

Teams will compete in different events, as well as, participate in the theme laps.

Daryl Elliot and William Simmons will emcee and provide music during the night.

The winners from the Miss Relay pageant will be recognized, and trophies will be presented to the teams in the following categories: most money raised, most money per capita, and most money raised on-line.

Teams will also compete for the Spirit of Relay award. The closing ceremony will begin at 2 a.m. on Saturday morning.

“We encourage everyone to come out and participate in Relay for Life,” Wilkes said.
