After sweeping their way through several holiday tournaments, the Crenshaw Christian Cougars have continued their hot streak in the new year, including a big 53-46 win over Evangel Christian Academy on Tuesday night.

“The team is playing hard right now on both ends of the court, and I feel like that’s why we’re successful and winning games,” said head coach Michael Malpass. “The effort on both sides of the ball is more consistent on a quarter-by-quarter stretch.”

Sebastian Deburchgraeve led the way for CCA by shooting a scorching 70 percent from the field and scoring 17 points.

Close behind Deburchgraeve was Jake Hataway, who contributed 14 points.

Hataway also pulled down 10 rebounds, which was second only to Jelle Vermeyen’s 11 boards.

Vermeyen also made his presence known on the defensive end by blocking 10 shots.

The win moves the Cougars into a tie for second place in the region.

Malpass said the victory was big for the team’s season, and the home crowd played a large part.

“The coaches and players want to thank the fans,” he said. “The home crowd made a difference, and we really appreciate the support. That game was as loud as I’ve seen it in the five years I’ve been here.”

In other recent games, the Cougars defeated South Montgomery County Academy 65-26 in a rout.

Hataway set the tone for that one with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

CCA also recorded a 61-22 victory over East Memorial and a 55-39 win over Autauga Academy.

The JV boys won 39-37 over Evangel.

Shaun Lewis had 15 points to lead the Cougars to their third win of the season.
