At the Brantley City Council’s Tuesday night meeting, council members continued to investigate the matter of ownership over a ballfield near the city’s housing projects.

Mayor Bernie Sullivan said the issue has been questioned due to concerns about liability.

“We’re just trying to find out who owns it,” Sullivan said.

Town administrator Larry Morgan said he spent an afternoon at the county courthouse searching for the original deed, but he was unable to find anything but a declaration of trust dated from 1962, several years after the founding of the housing authority.

After some discussion, the council voted to ask the housing authority to produce a deed for the property or conduct a title search to determine ownership.

In other business, the council also listened to a proposal about the state of Alabama’s Big Read, which is set for a Feb. 9 kickoff.

Accordingly, the council declared that day Tom Sawyer Day, and the mayor will take part in a public reading event at the courthouse.
