Annie Katheryn Farrior Brunson

BRUNSON, Mrs. Annie Katheryn Farrior, 77, a resident of Luverne died Tuesday January 12, 2010.

Funeral services will be 10 am Thursday January 15, 2010 at the Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Zimmer officiating.

Interment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mrs. Brunson is preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin L. Brunson; a daughter, Kathy Williams; grandson, Christopher Register; and four brothers, Kenneth Farrior, Calvin Farrior, Clifford Farrior and Francis Farrior.

Survivors include three children, Howard (Sheila) Brunson, Sharon (Jimmy) Allen and Olin Brunson; ten grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Brunson, Dennis Dickey, David Dickey, Raymond Blaisedell, Joey Brunson and Larry Brunson.

Lois Rayburn Chandler

Mrs. Lois Rayburn Chandler of Brantley, AL passed away January 5, 2010 at Elba Nursing Home after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Funeral services were held at Hayes Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, January 8, 2010 beginning at 2:00 PM with Rev. Phillip Rayburn officiating.

Burial followed in the Pine Level Community Cemetery under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.

Visitation was at Hayes Funeral Home on Friday, January 8, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

She was born to Effie Payne Rayburn and William James Rayburn on September 2, 1927 and wed James Phoman Chandler on May 8, 1945.

Always putting others before herself, as Christ teaches, she leaves behind a legacy of a self-less, wonderful, thoughtful caregiver of her mother, husband, and children.

She showed true strength and resilience in the face of such a horrible disease and will be so missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Survivors include her husband, James Phoman Chandler of Brantley, Al, daughter Betty Stapleton (Gene) of Prattville, Al, daughter Debora Miele (John) of Madison, Al, Grandson Michael Boothe (Rita) of Elba, Al, Granddaughter Lauren Miele of Madison, Al, Great-Granddaughter Riley Boothe, Great Grandson Adam Boothe, and Sister Lee Morgan ((Fred D.) of Elba, Al.

Idell Tisdale Darby

Mrs. Idell Tisdale Darby, daughter of Sonny and Julia Tisdale, passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 12, 2010 at 2:40 a.m. at her home on Jeffcoat Ct., here in Luverne, Ala.

Born on Oct. 1, 1921, Mrs. Darby was 88 years old.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sonny and Julia; a daughter, Martha Jean Darby; two sisters, Porche Tisdale and Linnie Kimberly; and two brothers, R.B. (Monk) Tisdale and A.B. Tisdale.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Mrs. Darby on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. at New Hope Valley Missionary Baptist Church of Luverne, where the Rev. Melvin Jackson is pastor.

Mrs. Darby will lovingly be remembered by her children: Calvin (Helen) Darby of Luverne; Joyce (Rev. LeRoy) Marshall, Phyllis (Michael) Giles, Joseph Darby Jr., Brenda (Charles) Harris and Kevin (Elizabeth) Darby, all of Louisville, Kentucky; two sisters: Mrs. Annie Harris and Mrs. Carrie Maddox, both of Luverne; 18 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Visitation with family and friends will be held Friday, Jan. 15 at Moore Chapel Funeral Home on 159 West Sixth Street from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Claud Edward Johnson

Mr. Claud Edward Johnson, age 72, of Goshen passed away, Friday, January 8, 2010 at his residence.

Funeral services for Mr. Johnson were at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 11, 2010 from the chapel of Green Hills Funeral Home, with Reverend W.O. Sanders officiating.

Burial followed at the Providence Cemetery in Glenwood.

Family received friends Sunday, January 10, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Green Hills Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda “Lynn” Johnson, one son, Mickey (Diane) Johnson of Goshen, AL, two daughters, Marquita (Tim) Franklin of Goshen, AL, Rhonda (Mark) Miley of Goshen, AL and one step daughter Monique (Tom) Crawley of Goshen, AL and Monique’s two children Edward and Audra Shumpert.

Eight grandchildren, Kia Jo Holladay, Richard (Kristin) Johnson, Blaine Farr, Rod (Tanya) Villegas, Jason (Alison) Franklin, Chad (Gina) Franklin, Peyton (Dusty) Taylor & Kelly (Rusty) Tomlin. Nine great-grandchildren Brandon Holladay, Chloe Johnson, Reanna and Megan Villegas, Kelsey, Brett, and Abby Franklin, Miley Taylor, Ella~Kate and Ana Jaymes Tomlin. One great-great nephew Triton Whiddon.

He was preceded in death by his parents Milton and Rachel (King) Johnson, brother Clyde Lewis Johnson, niece Kathy Johnson Whiddon, great nephew Marcus Dale Whiddon, and a special aunt Ruth King.

Claud was an avid horse lover and spent his life training, showing, judging and sharing his knowledge of horses with people of all ages.

He saw beauty in all horses, but his expertise was working with walking and racking horses.

He traveled yearly to the World Racking Horse Celebration to spend a week with the top horses, trainers, and owners. Claud leaves behind many special friends from the 60 plus years he worked with his much beloved animals.

Voncille J. Shirley

SHIRLEY, Mrs. Voncille J., 81, a resident of Luverne, AL died Tuesday, January 12 2010. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 11 AM from South Luverne Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Green officiating.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mrs. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey L. Shirley; her son, Kenny L. Shirley; three sisters, Ella Mae McKenzie, Lucille Morrow, and Hazel Hodge; and three brothers, William Johnson, Wilbert “Doc” Johnson, and Jim Johnson.

She is survived by four daughters, Deborah S. (Dennis) Anderson, Silvalane S. Vinson, Amelia S. (Ricky) Whiddon, and Francine S. (Robbie) Styron; eleven grandchildren, Jimmy L. Ballard, Jason Barron, Patrick D. Layton, Jr., Amanda Layton Roberts, Daniel T. Brown, Ryan K. Brown, Anna B. Whiddon, Abby L. Whiddon, Mieke S. Sipper, Monica Shirley, and Matthew L. Shirley; seven great grandchildren, Gauge Ballard, Taylor Ballard, Sydney Ballard, Nikki Sipper, Tristan Jordan, and Matthew K. Shirley; one sister, Lennie Mae Moses.

Active pallbearers will be Larry Shirley, Gary Shirley, Doyle Turner, Donald Moses, Scott Johnson, and Shannon McKenzie. Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm at South Luverne Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the South Luverne Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 264, Luverne, AL 36049, or to The American Cancer Society.

Margaret W. “Peggy” Smyth

SMYTH, Mrs. Margaret W. “ Peggy”, 76, a resident of Luverne departed this life for a better one Saturday January 9, 2010.

Peggy is now at home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, where she will one day be reunited with her loved ones left behind.

Peggy was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Luverne, AL.

Peggy is survived by her husband of almost 58 years, Justice D. “ Buddy” Smyth, and her four sons, Justice D. Smyth, III (Rushan) of Tuscaloosa, Mark T. Smyth, David H. Smyth (Becky), and Richard R. Smyth (Kathy), all of Luverne; six grandchildren, Justice and Jeff Smyth of Tuscaloosa, Courtney, Suzanne, and Rann Smyth, all of Luverne and Ryan Gibson (Deanna) of Brantley; one brother, Wilson Wooley (Karen) of Enterprise; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Wooley of Macon, GA and Pat Wooley of Harlingen, TX.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ross H. Wooley and two brothers, Ross H. Wooley, Jr and Richard B. Wooley.

Graveside services were held at 11 am Monday January 11, 2010 at the Luverne Emmaus Cemetery with Rev. Mike Green officiating and Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Active pallbearers were Justice D. Smyth, IV, Jeff Smyth, Rann Smyth, Ryan Gibson, Blake Folmar and Cody Miller.
