The Cougars of Crenshaw Christian Academy opened the 2010-2011 season on Tuesday, Nov. 24, against Springwood School out of Lanett, Ala. The junior varsity girls coached by first-year head coach Tyler Hill lost 30 to 7. Shelby Williams led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 7 points. The junior varsity boys coached by 5th year head coach Michael Malpass won 19 to 16 in a defensive battle. The boys were led in scoring by Tyler McGough with 11 and Shaun Lewis with 8 points.

The nightcap began with a varsity Lady Cougar win by a score of 39-30. This was a big win for the Cougars because it was a region game and a win for 1st year head coach Tyler Hill.

“The girls responded well tonight in the second half,” Hill said. “We let Springwood get back in the game at the end of the second quarter, but pulled away in the 3rd quarter largely because of good execution on the offensive and defensive end of the court.”

The Cougars go to 1-0 on the seaon and more importantly, pick up a region win. The Cougars were led in scoring by Candice Dunn with 22 points and Kaitlyn Faulk with 10 points. Kayla Beasley led the Cougars in rebounding with 11 boards. Kelly Sasser, Anna Ring, and Rachel Tatom did a good job on the defensive end, according to Hill.

The varsity boys finished the night off with a win by a score of 70-44.

“The game was not very rhythmic because the guys have not had a lot of time to gel yet, but they played hard and were disruptive on the defensive end,” head coach Michael Malpass said. “We were glad to get the win, but look forward to some down time over the holidays and some practice time when we get back from this break.”

The Cougars were led in scoring by senior Jake Hataway who had a career high of 40 points and 12 rebounds. Tate Welch scored 10 points and Sebastian Deburchgraeve and Darren Foster added 8 points. Senior Jelle Vermeyen had 4 blocks and 11 rebounds. Austin Brown, Tyler McGough, and Mac Blake also helped the Cougars by playing well on both ends of the court, Malpass added.

Crenshaw is in action at East Memorial on Tuesday, Dec. 1st, at 4 p.m. with all 4 teams playing; also, CCA will host Autauga Academy on Dec. 4th at 4 p.m. with all 4 teams in action. These are both region games.
