The Crenshaw County Health Department will offer the H1N1 vaccine to anyone who wishes to get one beginning today and running through tomorrow, according to Terrie Bedgood, Crenshaw County Health Department ASA II.

The clinic will be open for the vaccinations from 8-noon and from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

There is no charge for the H1N1 vaccine.

“Anybody can get one this time,” Bedgood said.

The health department offered the vaccine to specific target groups only from Oct. 28-30, Bedgood explained. Even then, the health department only had a 72-hour notice that they were even going to be receiving the vaccine, therefore not leaving much time to get the word out to those who were in the target groups, such as emergency first-responders, pregnant women, and small children.

“We received 280 doses over those three days in October, and we gave out on that Friday,” she said. “We don’t know how many doses we’ll get this time; we’ll just continue to give the vaccines until we run out.”

In its first three days of administering H1N1 influenza vaccine statewide, county health departments had administered more than 70 percent of the doses they had been sent, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

“The H1N1 influenza vaccine has been found to be safe, effective and well tolerated,” the ADPH said in a released statement. “The vaccine, approved and licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is manufactured using the same process as the seasonal influenza vaccine. To date, Alabama has received over 400,000 doses of the more than 590,000 doses ordered. About 60 percent of the vaccine is expected to arrive after Dec. 1.”
