The Luverne 11-12-year old All Stars came up one game short as their run at a possible Dixie Youth State Tournament spot ended at the hands of the powerful White Plains All Stars.

White Plains posted an overwhelming 10-0 victory in 4 innings at East Montgomery Park July 18 over Luverne.

White Plains defeated Luverne 17-7 only two days earlier to put them in the losers’ bracket with an 0-1 record.

On Friday, however, the Luverne All Stars pulled out two important wins, pulling their record up 2-1.

In the first game on Friday, July 17, Luverne faced the Crossville All Stars; they scored three runs early in the first inning and an insurance run in the second to lead 4-0.

Crossville came storming back with two runs in the sixth, but that was not enough as Luverne held them to a 4-2 win.

Luverne wasted little time putting up early runs that afternoon as they grabbed a 2-0 lead over the Wilcox County All Stars in the first inning. They racked up two four-run innings and went on to down Wilcox County 10-4.

Luverne then faced the Opelika All Stars, who took an early 4-0 lead and never looked back, downing Luverne 12-2.

The White Plains All Stars lost 15-3 to the host team, East Montgomery. With that loss and both teams standing at 2-2 in the tournament, a rematch between Luverne and White Plains was inevitable.

However, Luverne’s dreams of advancing came to an end as White Plains pounded out 10 runs to win the game 10-0.

The top three in the tournament were East Montgomery, Opelika, and White Plains.
