The Brantley Town Council voted to change the name of Community Field to Lorey Bogen, Sr. Field at its last regular meeting on May 19.
Brantley Mayor Bernie Sullivan said the town was presently working on the field to make improvements to it.
“Lorey Bogen, Sr., was instrumental in starting that field several years ago,” Sullivan explained before a room filled with citizens, including Bogen. “It was there before the Housing Authority was there.”
According to the Mayor, the field will have concessions, and Pepsi of Luverne will put up a new scoreboard.
“We want it to be a community field for everyone—not a segregated field,” Sullivan said.
The council unanimously agreed on the motion to rename the field.
Councilmember Darryl Elliott thanked the Mayor and other council members for what they were doing for the community field and for getting “this project going.”
The council halted its meeting as Sen. Wendell Mitchell came in to present a $25,000 check to the town for infrastructure needs.
“You said that you had local needs,” Mitchell said. “I haven’t forgotten about it.”
“We always appreciate what Sen. Mitchell does for us,” Sullivan said. “I’m afraid that after he retires, Crenshaw County won’t get another senator from our area to take care of us like he has.”
