The Greenville High School football team is gearing up for a different kind of fundraiser later this week: a lift-a-thon.

This Thursday, the Tigers will gather in the field house to lift weights to raise money.

Over the last couple of weeks, players have been recording their max weights for bench press, squat, clean and split jerk.

“Those four will be added together, and kids have gone out and gotten pledges per pound,” said head coach Ben Blackmon. “If the total is 1,000 pounds and the pledge is a penny per pound, then that’s $10.”

When Thursday rolls around, the players will try to increase their maximum weight on each lift.

“People get around and start encouraging them,” Blackmon said. “The kids get exposure, and they get excited. Sometimes you see a pretty big jump in poundage because the kids have the adrenaline rushing.”

Blackmon said he’s done this sort of fundraiser at Opelika before and it was successful.

The lift-a-thon is set to start at 5 p.m. Thursday in the field house.
