After pulling out a tough game against Frisco City in the first round of the area tournament, the Georgiana girls ran into J.F. Shields in the championship and Shields won 61-28.

“We just had poor shooting,” said head coach John Cheatham. “We were getting opportunities, but the layups and jumpers just weren’t falling. We were missing easy baskets.”

Cheatham said that he also felt like his team wasn’t prepared, but Shields was.

“I thought we were ready, but evidently not,” he said.

In the first round of the tournament, Georgiana pulled out a 29-25 win over Frisco City.

“They played use close in the regular season,” Cheatham said. “We sometimes have a tendency to play down to our opponents. They played us hard in the regular season and they played us hard in the tournament.”

Now the Panthers will travel to McIntosh to face the undefeated Demons.

The Demons are ranked No. 1 in the final class 1A poll.

However, playing a top opponent is nothing new for the Panthers.

“We’ve been fortunate enough to play three of the top teams in the state,” said Cheatham.

Georgiana has also faced off against No. 5 J.F. Shields and No. 4 Pleasant Home.

“We know how you have to play at the top,” Cheatham added.

McIntosh and Georgiana will play on Thursday night.
