Downtown Greenville won’t lose one of its most popular businesses after all.

Duke’s Shell Service Center, located at 400 W. Commerce St., has re-opened under new ownership, said Jim McGowin of Max Oil Company. Max Oil is the gasoline distributor for Duke’s.

McGowin said the store was closed for approximately two weeks.

The store’s first day open under new owner Henry Schofield was Tuesday. Schofield owns a similar Shell gas station, MJ’s Food Mart and Car Wash, on 1306 E. Commerce St.

How did Schofield come to own two Shell stations?

“The oil company sort of talked me into it,” he chuckled on Tuesday. “But we just got it back opened today and it looks we’re going to do good. We’ve been real busy.”

Schofield said he plans to move his car wash business exclusively to Duke’s Shell. Duke’s also offered car washes, as well as oil changes, tire repair and replacement, and full-service and self-service gasoline.

Schofield said the name will also remain the same.
