Cougars running hot with 18-1 standing

The Crenshaw Christian Academy boys’ varsity basketball team is currently tied for first in the region with East Memorial Christian Academy (8-1).

Their current overall record is

18-1.

Junior Jake Hataway averages 17 points a game, while senior Eric Van Beek averages 13 points a game. Jake Page drops in 10 points, Davis Layton 9 points, and Jelle Vermeyen 7 points a game on average.

Page averages 12 rebounds per game, while Vermeyen and Hataway each pull down an average of 9 rebounds per game.

Van Beek averages 8 assists per game.

The Crenshaw Cougars defeated Lakeside 72-38 on January 9, with Van Beek racking up 21 points and Hataway adding 18 points to the final score.

However, the Varsity Cougars failed to hold on to their unblemished record Tuesday night in Prattville as Eastern Memorial Christian Academy brought the Cougars down with a 53-51 heartbreaking loss.

Van Beek led the Cougars with 18 points, while Page added 12 points, and Vermeyen dropped in 10 points in the loss.

“Our varsity boys’ team is extremely talented,” said head coach Michael Malpass.

“But they have a lot of work to do in order to achieve the goal we set at the start of the season, which is to win the state championship.”

CCA will travel to South Montgomery Christian Academy tonight. Game time is 4 p.m.
