VIRGINIA FRANKLIN

HERRON

Mrs. Virginia Franklin Herron, age 82, of W. Greenwood Dr., Carrollton, Ga., passed away Monday, December 15, 2008. She was born June 4, 1926 in Crenshaw County, AL, the daughter of Magdalene Lassiter Franklin and Leon Hall Franklin. Mrs. Herron was retired from business services at West Georgia College after 21 years of service and was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Frank Herron. Survivors include her daughter, Laura Herron Lamb of Carrollton; sister, Ramona Franklin Barrow of Andalusia, AL.; also two grandchildren, Emily Rebecca Lamb and Jennifer Amanda Lamb, both of Carrollton. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m. from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel with Rev. Karen Kagiyama, Dr. Mike Cordle and Rev. Robert Manley officiating. Music was provided by the church choir. Paul Adams, Wayne Robinson, Dick Balte, David Harris, David Newton and Marty Bray served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Jewell Mashburn, Janice Balte, Patti Gill, Jackie Esslinger, Betsy Griffies, Vicki McCorsley, Janette Robinson, Kitty Blanton, Diane Sharp, Betty Harris, Amy Harris, Willene Cooper and Beatrice Parker. VERNON FRANKS

FRANKS, Mr. Vernon “Buck”, 69, a resident of Rutledge, Ala., died Sunday, December 14, 2008. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Centenary Assembly of God Church with Rev. Robert Carter and Lamar Gibson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mr. Franks was preceded in death by his son, Christopher V. Franks; parents, Jake and Belle Franks; and four brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Syble McGough Franks; three daughters, Denise (Michael) Smith, Bobbie (Ricky) Simmons and Angela Williams; one daughter-in-law, Pamela Kay Franks; five grandchildren, Timothy Franks, Andrew Smith, Ethan Smith, James Richard Simmons and Shelby Simmons; two sisters, Juanita “Bob” Strickland and Geneva Swann; and three sisters-in-law, Cleo Franks, Gwen Franks and Jackie Franks.

HOLLAND

HOLLAND, Mr. Joe Moxley, 90, a resident of Luverne, Ala., died Friday, December 19, 2008. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at the Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Spurlin officiating. Interment followed in the Luverne Emmaus Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mr. Holland was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Spivey Holland and three great-grandsons, Beau Caudill, Caleb Taylor and Jesse Taylor. Survivors include five children, Sandra (Alan) Miller, JoAnne (Rick) Cothran, Don (Marian) Holland, Ron Holland and David (Arlee) Holland; twelve grandchildren, Steven (Nicki) Miller, Forrest Miller, Jamie Miller, Toni (Christian) Caudill, Dustin Holland, Nina Holland, Joshua McGhan, Chris (Terrie) Spurlin, Ashley Holland Goodman, Tonya (Shawn) Taylor, Chad (Michelle) Spurlin and Derrick Cothran; thirteen great-grandchildren, Hannah Miller, Alex Caudill, Luke Caudill, Errick Cothran, Ethan Cothran, Ryan Spurlin, Kara Spurlin, Kaylee Spurlin, Savannah Taylor, Coltin Taylor, Cole Spurlin, Clay Spurlin and Mary Claire Spurlin. Active pallbearers were Steven Miller, Forrest Miller, Alan Miller, Chad Spurlin, Ryan Spurlin and Shawn Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Wilburn Schofield Sunday School Class at Luverne First Baptist Church, Cecil Kelley, Henry Mobley and Dencil Schofield.

SAMUEL JOHN MITCHELL ANDREWS

Mr. Samuel John Mitchell “Mickey” Andrews of Ozark, Ala., passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at Ozark Health & Rehabilitation. He was 82.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Randall Johnson, Rev. William Hart, and Rev. Isom Hill officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. Visitation was held at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home on Friday night, December 19, from 6-8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to The Joash Fund of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 1124 County Road 11, Ozark, AL 36360 or The Gideons International, P.O. Mr. Andrews was born on January 9, 1926, in Pinckard, Alabama, son of Charles C. Andrews, Sr., and Daisy Belle Herring Andrews. Mr. Andrews was a lifelong resident of Dale County and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. After serving his country, he returned home and graduated from Dale County High School on May 30, 1949. Mr. Andrews worked as a heavy equipment operator for Post Engineer (Civil Service) at Fort Rucker for 35 years before his retirement.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Louie Frank Young, Sr.; and three brothers: Charles C. Andrews, Jr., Louie Frank Young, Jr., and Jack Ellison Young.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margaret Chancey Andrews, of Ozark; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Harrell and Lynn Andrews of Ozark and Samuel Mark and Keri Andrews of Brantley; three grandchildren: Krysten and Ashlee Andrews of Ozark, and Taylor Andrews of Auburn; one sister and brother-in-law, Frances Gail and George H. Barr, of Alexandria, VA; mother-in-law, Ara L. Chancey, of Ozark; sisters-in-law, Grace Andrews of Ozark, and Vann Richardson Sullivan of McKeesport, PA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, June and James K. Hughes, and Myra and W.O. Hughes, all of Ozark; several nieces and nephews.

TIMOTHY JAMES SMITH

SMITH, Mr. Timothy James, 37, a resident of Brantley, Ala., died Saturday, December 20, 2008. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at the Weed Cemetery with Rev. Wesley Spivey officiating and Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, James and Gussie Williams Smith. Survivors include his wife of seven years, Summer Matthews Smith; two sons, Seth Ryder Smith and Timothy Gage Smith; three sisters, Nina Kate (Charles) Holmes, Debra (Richard) Brown and Lisa (Jeff) Barron; and one brother, Terry (Shirley) Smith.

Active pallbearers were Eddie Swanzy, Stephen Shelton, Asa Leverett, Jackie Cook, Mack Rhodes and Danny Paul.
